Color Discrimination, EarlyUsing Twister to Teach Colors
To begin the game you need to take the color floor mat from the game and introduce the colors to the child.
Example: See Red, Touch Red.
This will get the child familiar with the floor mat. Below is listed a few ways that you can use the game depending on the skill level of the child.
- Early Learners:
Tips: Fold the floor mat up in half so it does not seem too overwhelming for the child.
- Have the child step or hop on each color as you name them.
- You can also have the child toss a ball, etc.. on the color as you name the color.
- Intermediate:
Tips: Now completely open the floor mat.
- Repeat the steps for the early learners as a review.
- Now have color cards and have the child match the colors you give them to the colored circles on the floor mat.
- Then also transfer the child’s knowledge of color by having them group items by the color on the floor mat. (Example: red crayon placed on the red circle, green Lego placed on the green circle).
- Advanced:
Tips: Now completely open the floor mat and introduce the color wheel.
- Continue to review from the previous steps to confirm their mastery.
- Now the child is in control of the game. They should have mastered the color concept by now.
- They will now work on some fine motor skills and spin the color wheel. The child can then use sight words, objects, color cards, or movement to go to the color the spinner landed on. You can now make this a game and teach my turn and your turn.
Extra Notes: This game is really a fun way to work on colors with children. By doing this you are also work on many other things like fine motor and, gross motor skills. You can even do some sensory things with the child by having them do it in their bare feet and feel the texture of the floor mat.
