Early Learner Skills

This list of skills has been compiled by combing through various developmental assessments, research articles and personal experience. It is a suggestion of skills that might be appropriate targets for Early Learners with autistic spectrum disorders, regardless of their age.

We suggest the following paradigm for choosing what skills to teach first. Choose skills that have natural opportunities or can be related to current interests. For instance, we choose to teach "empty and full" and "in and out" to our early learners, because most of them are quite interested in whether their cups are full or empty, or like to pour in and out. As always, we try to give you practical teaching tips, so that you have specific ideas to encourage fun learning. Remember, serious teaching can be seriously fun!
