The Poo Poo Song

You may think we are really gross people here at Autism Teaching Tools, but how many of you would like to have your child tell you when they need to go to the bathroom? We see this as an essential skill, and so have paired our diaper changing experiences with the Poo Poo Song. It has helped make diaper changes a happy time for us, and our learners love to sing along. AND, a nice side effect is that they have begun to say, "I have Poo Poos" spontaneously (and appropriately) with no additional training. I'm not saying that will be the case with every child, but it's a suggestion to help facilitate talking about internal body events (or slightly stinky external ones). Fact is, our kids love this song.

Note: Sing "I Have Poo Poos" when your LEARNER has them--either on the toilet or in the diaper. You don't have to model this one! The pronoun reversal (for you) helps your learner express his or her internal event with the correct pronoun.

Sung to the tune of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah

Lyrics:
I have Poo Poos!
I have Poo Poos!
I have Poo Poos, I have Poo Poos, I have Poo Poos!

OK, so we're not that original with the tune. But it's just SO versatile!
